Icelandic Sheep
About Icelandic Sheep
Icelandic sheep are the best tasting sheep according to Dad. The generations before us have always had sheep. Dad claimed that after eating some of the Icelandic lamb that we had been raising the wrong sheep all these years. Mom uses their wool in her off time but hasn’t done much lately. Too many other fun things to do! Icelandics do have a wild side and like to travel, they are the best escape artists so it is a hard job keeping them close to home. They come in lots of different colors though, so they are usually easy to spot on the neighbors, whoops!
Icelandic’s as you can guess are a heritage breed that originate from Iceland brought there by the Vikings. They are triple purpose sheep for meat, milk and wool. They have long fuzzy dual coats that make amazing hand spinning fleeces. They need to be shorn twice a year, and their wool felts very easily. Their meat is considered gourmet as they put fat on internally and has a unique and very non greasy or gamey flavor. They are said to be great milkers and very easy keepers as they need grass only to thrive.
